City is alive, constantly changing and evolving system, full of different types of interactions. Urban decisions are not capable of stopping nor controlling grassroots initiatives. One of principle rules of balanced city development is rise, growth and taking over existing structures by bottom-up actions. During these slow but constant processes new architectural structures upraise in unoccupied areas, old ones are changed by new tenants with new layers of plaster and paint. Finally some of them die. They are destroyed by new area owners, they are demolished because of their bad condition, they are forgotten to make place for new structures. Walking on the streets of big, but not only, cities of Europe we meet places intriguing because of their ambiguity. In classic city frontage, in consecutive series of buildings we face void spaces. Unknown, mysterious causes lead to gaps in consistent structure of the street, and characteristic for metropolis sad, blind walls are created. Travelling around the Europe or walking in my hometown I carefully watch blind walls, I observe an evolution of wild facades.
I wonder about the possibilities of re-joining these partly abandoned placed to the healthy urban fabric. Which meanings of these places should be preserved,underlined, and which should be removed. 'Space inbetween' project is to collect these partly wild, characteristic for every European city, miserable places in Strasbourg and Gdansk into an album. The purpose of the project is not finding one, unique, perfect solution, Idea of finding such is a dangerous utopia that can lead to unification of those places. Although at the first glance they are the same, each of them have something special and unique. My intention is to analyze each of found places. Give an impulse that can start processes for fruitful future of these forgotten spaces. My purpose is to highlight the problem common in both Poland and France. The final result is not to be foreseen. I hope it would be a beginning of positive changes from bottom-up initiatives. I believe that public space can open itself for artistic inference and be inspired.
